Ai-Ai Delas Alas feted at 44th Guillermo Mendoza Awards Though her heart is aching

An annual recognition of the most popular and commercially viable performers in Philippine showbiz, it is the only mainstream showbiz award-giving body that announces all its honorees in advance.

The Box Office Entertainment Awards does not traffic in controversy. Still better known as the Guillermo Mendoza Awards because it is given out by the Guillermo Mendoza Memorial Foundation, it does not claim to be an arbiter of taste or merit, only popularity.

Whenever showbiz figures are involved nevertheless controversy is inevitable.

It would turn out later that they had broken up for good.During last year’s ceremony, for instance, the big issue came courtesy of second-time Box Office King awardee Derek Ramsay, who had just raised eyebrows by announcing his transfer from ABS-CBN to TV5 and then admitted to News5 that night that his six-year relationship with Angelica Panganiban was on the rocks.
Angelica is among the awardees at this year’s event, held Sunday at the AFP Theater in Camp Aguinaldo, but it was comedienne Ai-Ai de las Alas whom people were whispering about as she attended the ceremony to receive her share of the night’s biggest award — Phenomenal Box Office Star — with “Sisterakas” co-stars Kris Aquino and Vice Ganda.

Ai-Ai had appeared in a heart-rending taped interview on “ The Buzz” a few hours ago where she spilled the ugly details of her separation of Jed Sagang former husband a month ago.
