Mercito Gesta, a 24-year-old lightweight contender, the undefeated Filipino boxer and a Philippines pride with a record of 24 wins and 1 draw in his professional boxing career will take on the fight against Oscar Cuero of Colombia with a record of 15 wins and 7 losses in a scheduled eight round bout this coming Saturday April 14th at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.
In an interview with Ronnie Nathanielsz of PhilBoxing,
'He(Gesta) is right on track. He looks good and I expect a lot of action. I expect a very, very aggressive and sharp Mercito Gesta,' Gesta’s trainer Vince Parra said.
'(We are) looking forward to a good HBO debut and with the fight being broadcast to the Philippines, Mercito is excited about that.'
'Even though we didn’t get the big name opponent that we might have wanted, we are looking at this as a great opportunity because we have a tough opponent, even though his record isn’t that great,' Parra added.
If Gesta will be having a dominant victory against the experienced Colombian Cuero, then, he wil have a chance to fight for a world title fight in his next fight.
We Filipino boxing fans, we likely to support Mercito Gesta in his boxing journey, for he is dubbed as the next Filipino boxing superstar as congressman and boxing great Manny Pacquiao will soon to farewell his boxing career and will focus more on politics too soon but there's no definite announcement yet for Manny.
