The Filipino Flash reigning WBC bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire is schedule to face Wilfredo Vasquez Jr. of Puerto Rico in San Antonio, Texas on February 4.
Donaire (27-1, 18 KO) made his New York debut last
October 22 against super flyweight Omar Narvaez. Donaire is ranked number 1 in THE RING's bantamweight ratings and number 4 in the pound-for-pound ratings.
Vazquez (21-1-1, 18 KO) is an exciting fighter with a high quality punching power and a Puerto Rican with a famous fighting father, so he would be counted to bring the most entertaining fight for Nonito Donaire unlike Omar Narvaez. This guy always comes to fight and it will be interesting to see if Nonito Donaire can keep his power and speed at this weight class.
Donaire has a victory record over Omar Narvaez of Argentina last October 22 at the Madison Square Garden in New York, retaining his WBC and WBO bantamweight belts.
But the Donaire vs. Vasquez fight will be in the undercard of the Julio Cesar Chavez vs. Vanes Martirosyan as the main event at the Alamodome.
According to ESPN's DanRafael, Donaire is leaving the bantamweight division to face Vazquez for the vacant featherweight title.
The Puerto Rican Vasquez slugger made a name for himself after he defeated Marvin Sonsona of the Philippines to win the WBO super bantamweight title in February last year but Vazquez lost to Mexico's Jorge Arce via knockout in the 12th round. Arce has since vacated the title and moved down to bantamweight. This event was promoted by Top Rank Promotions by Top Rank Boss Bob Arum.
Will Donaire crown as WBO super bantamweight champion by defeating Vasquez? Or Vasquez will going to defeat the Filipino champion Donaire? The answer will be this next year's February 4, 2012.
